| 10/25/06: Our resident research expert, Andrew Wilson (AKA Librarian) has struck gold again. This is a
long-lost drive-in we'd figured we never find photos of. But thanks to Andrew, here it is, the
B&D Drive-In in the U.P.
|
 |
| 10/21/06: We've added some very cool aerial shots of three Lansing-area drive-in's. They include the
M-78 Twin Drive-In, the
Northside Drive-In, and the
Crest Drive-In. These early 1970's shots were
submitted by Carl Easlick via Waterwinterwonderland.com.
|
 |
| 10/21/06: The
Drive-In Restaurants Page has been updated, including this vintage shot of a long-gone
A&W in Lansing. There are also
new shots of a former
Henry's Drive-In, also in Lansing.

Links Page, adding a few new links and deleting some dead ones.
|
 |
| 10/4/06: Former
Pontiac Drive-In Manager Greg McGlone has submitted his collection of Pontiac photos from the 1970's thru the 1990's.
Look for a dedicated page with all of Greg's photos soon. Thanks again to Greg, and Gary at Waterwinterwonderland.com for
the great photos!
|
 |
| 10/2/06: A nice shot of the
Cherry Bowl Drive-In from 1970. Many thanks to Andrew Wilson for digging up this vintage photo.
|
 |
| 10/2/06: Andrew also found a couple of shots of the long-gone
Sully's Drive-In Restaurant from the 1960's. Sully's was a popular drive-in on Lansing's Westside.
|
 |
| 10/1/06: The elusive
Blue Sky Drive-In in Pontiac has finally revealed herself, and she's a beauty!!! Former Blue Sky manager Greg
took these awesome shots in 1975. Many thanks to Greg, and Gary at Waterwinterwonderland.com for sharing these photos.
|
 |
| 10/1/06: An amazing rendition of the

Sky Drive-In
and the recently closed
Lenawee Twin Drive-In has been posted here. The article
features this sad photo of the Sky screen. Thanks
to Dennis Gibbs for submitting the article.
|
 |

| 6/17/06: Great News, according to the 5-Mile Drive-In Website, the
drive-in has a new owner and is supposed to be reopening soon! Look for the reopening date here. We
previously reported the demise of the Silverdome Drive-In, but now have reports that it reopened on June 16th. No word on
how long it will remain open.
|
 |
| 6/17/06: A NEW drive-in in Michigan?! Don't get too excited, it looks like another temporary drive-in has sprung up.
This one is at Kens Diner in Birch Run, and is called
"Kens Car Hop Drive-In Theater". Apparently the diner is a big classic car
attraction and their drive-in will run classic movies only. More to come as we get details, stay tuned.
|
 |
| 6/17/06: Pixars fantastic new movie "Cars", made it's Michigan drive-in premier at Michigans premier drive-in,
the Capri in Coldwater. The flick will be a fav for
drive-in buffs, as a drive-in is prominently featured. The abandoned Rt.66 "Radiator Springs Drive-In Theater" comes
back to life at the end of the film, very cool!
|
 |
| 6/17/06: We've found another "undiscovered" drive-in....maybe. This one actually was listed on the old
Evil Sams Drive-In Theatre Guide way
back when. A recent search through the Yahoo Yellow Pages
brought up a Gospel Film Drive-In Theatre.
A site inspection found the Antioch Baptist Church, and
what looks like could have been a drive-in out back. More to come as we dig deeper on this one.

5/2/06 Openings and Closings:
Your support has helped bring about the renovation of the main screen at the recently reopened
Getty 4 Drive-In,
where a new screen is planned
for the old screen tower. Check out the latest photos on the
Getty page.
Other Michigan Drive-Ins are also reopened, or
reopening soon, see the
Open Drive-Ins
page for details. Sadly, we have to report the
Silverdome Drive-In
has now closed, the
Ford-Wyoming 6-9 Drive-In
will close at the
end of this season, and
the
5-Mile Drive-In
is now "closed until further notice." Sad news indeed.
Please $UPPORT the remaining Michigan Drive-In Theaters!!
We have more very cool 60's-era vintage shots of the
Algiers Drive-In,
once again submitted by drive-in vet Fredrick Ryan.
4/9/06 Stormbringer:
We have uncovered evidence of yet another drive-in screen tower brought down by mother nature.
This time it was a October 1966 wind storm that hit the
Lakes Drive-In
up in the U.P. Thanks to
photographer Carl Liikunen and Dave Harkonen for the color photo.
Digging through the old newspapers on microfilm at the State of Michigan library yielded the
"Gone With The WInd" B&W photo,
along with the Lakes opening article, and opening and closing ads.
3/25/06 VIP Theatres:
Former Northside Drive-In manager Curt Peterson has once again provided us with a
new batch of drive-in photos. These shots are from Curt and Harry Mohney's former
Michigan drive-in circuit known as VIP Theatres. The new photos include the
Seaway,
Northside,
Alpena,
Thunder Bay,
Crest,
Tuscola,
Blue Sky (Caseville)
and
Starlite (Bay City)
Drive-In's.
3/17/06 Neon Lights:
We did a quick road trip to the
Getty 4 Drive-In
in Muskegon for some additional photos of the screen tower,
Gary Ritzenthaler at
Waterwinterwonderland.com
managed to quickly score a night time neon shot of the
Scio Drive-In marquee! And, the
Capri Drive-In
finally opens tonight!!
3/11/06 One screen dies and another lives on:
Sad news to report, the original screen tower at the
Getty 4
in Muskegon was damaged during a storm in October 2005. Unfortuately,
the screen is currently being demolished, but will hopefully be replaced. The Getty is expected to open as
planned in April with 3 screens. You can show your support and let Jack Loeks Theatres know the Getty needs to remain a FOUR
screener by contacting them at
Celebrationcinema.com.
On the up side, we've recently discovered
the old
Lakes Drive-In
screen was saved! It was split into two and is currently in use at the
Galva Autovue
twin drive-in in Galva, Illinois.
3/11/06 Gratiot and Scio signs preserved:
Gratiot Joe Niedzielski sent in more
Gratiot Drive-In
shots, including one of the damaged "T" from the tower letters he saved
from certain destruction in 1984. Also, recently saved from the scrap yard by the Michigandriveins.com crew, was half of
the old
Scio Drive-In
sign.

1/25/06: Here's yet another drive-in we had no images of,
until now. Former
Silver Drive-In
projectionist Barney Kahn did a bunch of digging and uncovered these new
photos for us. Barney also found some background info on the Silver, which we will be posting soon.
1/22/06: More new photos, these feature the sad images of the
Gratiot Drive-In
screen tower demolition, submitted by our Gratiot historian Joe Niedzielski. Joe
also sent in a 50's Simplex Speaker ad, and a 1994 news article, both featuring the Gratiot.
We also have some vintage aerial shots of the Gratiot.
1/20/06: A new year brings some incredible new photos on Michigandriveins.com.
First, we have some vintage shots of the Wayne Drive-In, submitted by frequent contributor Fredrick
Ryan. Also a new shot of the University Drive-In
marquee from 1984, sent in by Frank Uhle.
