A long overdue update is finally here in just time for Christmas. A new Drive-In Theatre Forum called The Ozoner is now online, brought to you by Michigandriveins.com, but all drive-in fans are welcome to partake. Openly discuss all sorts of drive-in topics with other drive-in fans, post your drive-in photos, and an off-topic area is included as well.

We also have some new photos of the Dearborn and Ecorse Drive-In's after a 1980 storm blew through Metro Detoit. These
nice shots were submitted by frequent contributor Fredrick Ryan, thanks again Fredrick! Merry Christmas...and Happy New Year!!

WHATS NEW 7-27-05:

Michigans oldest drive-in theatre, The Hi-Way, has a brand new website; HIWAYDRIVE-IN.COM !!

WHATS NEW 7-4-05:

Happy Independance Day! Celebrate the 4th at a Michigan Drive-In....Open Michigan Drive-In's. A long overdue update has been done here at Michigandriveins.com. The biggest news is we have access to newly released historical Detroit-area aerial photos. These Wayne State University/DTE hi-resolution photos from the 1950's, 1960's and 1980's are simply amazing and show incredible detail on nearly every drive-in in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair and Monroe counties. Above, we have posted a couple of examples, The Bel-Air in Detroit from 1981 on the left and all THREE of Monroe's drive-in's on the right. Images of the elusive Dixie Drive-In have finally been found! We will eventually have all of these photos posted on the individual drive-in pages. Thanks so much to Mike Denja for sumbmitting this information!

BEL-AIR/DETROIT - ST.JOE AUTO - THUNDER BAY - GRAND RIVER - M-60 - COLDWATER

The Hi-Way, Sunset and 5-Mile will be opening in late May.

Our resident drive-in digital artist Gary Ritzenthaler at Waterwinterwonderland.com has been
up to his old tricks once again and has created this neon masterpiece, the magnificent
Town Drive-In! Click here for a hi-res version of this incredible work of art.

On another recent research trip to the State of Michigan library, yet another previously unknown Michigan drive-in was discovered. While searching through the newspapers on microfilm for the Meredith Drive-In's opening ad, we ran across an ad for the MIDWAY AUTO THEATRE near Gladwin. The Midway was open during the 1954 season and possibly beyond. Also, thanks to the initial research by Gary at Waterwinterwonderland.com, the location of the Constantine Auto Theatre was finally nailed down, and the Meredith Drive-In Grand Opening ad was found as well.

NEW UPDATES: HI-WAY - MIRACLE TWIN - HIAWATHA - JOLLY ROGER - DEARBORN
BEL-AIR - DETROIT - NORTH FLINT - NORTHLAND - FLINT - WESTSIDE - SILVER

WHATS NEW 3-19-05:

While the first day of Spring is only two days away, we are STILL seemingly stuck in an endless winter! However, the Capri Drive-In has announced its 2005 opening date as Thursday, March 24th. So we'll bundle up and head down to COLDwater! The Capri also has an awesome new Capridrivein.com website for 2005, designed once again by their very talented webmaster, Gary Ritzenthaler. Gary's handiwork can also be found at Waterwinterwonderland.com, and of course right here at Michigandriveins.com.

Not much new to offer so far this year. We did receive a very interesting shot of the ECORSE DRIVE-IN, which was taken
after the screen was destroyed by a July 1980 tornado. Thanks to photographer Warren Waterman for the submission.

After much research, we have finally found the date and location of radio DJ Dick Purtans supposely "famous" drive-in stunt in the early 1970's. Purtan, a long-time Detroit are DJ did his radio show from a drive-in early one Saturday morning in an attempt to bring attention to the problem of kids walking to school in the dark due to daylight savings time. He claimed the event received national press in this Keener13.com interview, but oddly enough, we found no coverage of it in any of the Detroit newspapers. This clipping is the only mention of it that was found. There was however, a mention of it in Boxoffice magazine, which is what brought us the date of the event. The event was held February 9th, 1974 at the Oak Drive-In, not the Bel-Air as reported elsewhere. If anyone has any additional info, please let us know.

WHATS NEW 1-22-05:

Happy New Year Michigan Drive-In fans! As we anxiously await another season of movies under the stars, all of our drive-ins (except for the Ford-Wyoming) are quietly hibernating underneath a thick blanket of cold white powder. Brrrrr......Think Spring!! The Capri Drive-In, as always, will be the first to reopen. Look for a late March opening again this year and check Capridrive-in.com for the latest updates. All nine remaining Michigan drive-in theatres are expected to reopen in 2005, their opening dates will be posted on the Open Drive-Ins page as they become availible.

Two brand new sections have recently been added to Michigan Drive Ins.com for 2005.

The first is, the Michigan Drive-Ins Timeline. From the Eastside Drive-In in 1938 to the Capri Drive-In in 2005, the Timeline features a year-by-year rundown of openings, closings and events in the 67 year history of Michigan Drive-In Theatres. On the right side of the page, you will find a yearly count of open drive-in's. This count is still in the very early stages of research and will be continually updated as new information comes to light. Also included are yearly tidbits of Michigan history.

A&W, Dog 'N Suds, Nip 'N Sip, Ted's Drive-In....coney dogs, burgers, fries, malts and root beer....yum!! We are now covering these Michigan eateries and their tasty menus with Michigan Drive-In Restaurants, This section is in it's very early stages and will be updated as research continues. The primary focus will be on the classic drive-in restaurant, but we will also cover a few diners and other vintage eateries such as Burger Chef and McDonalds. Not only will we feature photos and details of long-gone drive-ins, but we let you know where the survivors are and what's good to eat.
