| The THEATRE CATALOG was a yearly publication targeted at theatre owners and operators. The first edition was published in 1941, and it continued through the 1960's. The Theatre Catalog featured many things theatre-related, indoor and outdoor. Of most interest to us is the Review of Theatre Construction section, where we have found features on several Michigan drive-ins. Two examples are found below. The Theatre Catalog also featured various articles on "new" theatre innovations, including everything from Cinerama and Cinemascope, to 3-D projection and stereo sound. Full-page advertisements from DIT-MCO (Drive-In Theatre Manufacturing Co.), Simplex Projectors, Eprad Speakers, and Wagner Sign Service featured products for the drive-in theatre. Some issues also contained a complete detailed listing of every operating drive-in in the U.S. We hope to make one or more of these lists available here soon. The publisher of the Theatre Catalog was Jay Emanuel Publications of Philadelphia. Mr. Emanuel was also directly involved with theatres, his Jay Emanuel Theatres circuit consisted of the Reading Drive-In and the Exeter Drive-In, both in Reading Pennsylvania, and the Mt. Penn Drive-In in Stony Creek Mills Pennsylvania. The circuit also maintained three indoor theatres in Pennsylvania. We will be added more interesting articles and features from the Theatre Catalog in the near future. MichiganDriveIns.com is always on the lookout for Theatre Catalogs, if you know of any available, please e-mail us. |
