Have you ever wondered why your local drive-in closed? While there's several reasons that happened, the biggest reason was we just simply stopped attending. We stayed home and watched tv, or a vhs movie. Or, we went to the new multiplex indoor theatre. Here is the result:
Drive-In Graveyards. We call them graveyards because they have some remnant of the the old theater, left as a marker of what once was. Sort of like a tombstone.
Here you will find the eight surviving drive-in theaters in Michigan. This page is provided as a service to Michigan drive-in patrons,
and to help promote these theaters, hopefully prolonging their
existence. You should always call the theater before traveling to verify it is indeed open and what is showing that night.
MichiganDriveIns.com also does not offer
any movie listings, please refer to the individual theater
contact information below. Please do not ask us for showtimes or opening/closing dates.
You should know the drive-in's keep a very small percentage of the ticket price, so be sure to spend some money in the snack bar, this income is the key to their existence. Your continuing patronage of these theatres today and beyond is crucial to their survival, don't let these drive-ins go the way of the sad examples pictured here. We once enjoyed over one hundred and fifty drive-in's here in Michigan, and now there are just eight.
Sometime soon, possibly in 2013 or 2014, 35mm film distibution will be discontinued and the nationwide digital conversion will be complete. Small theaters and drive-ins that can't afford a $80,000-per-screen digital projection setup will have no choice but to close. Michigan will likely lose even more drive-ins, possibly half of the current survivors. Even more reason to support and enjoy your Michigan Drive-In Theaters now, while you still can!
