Who can forget seeing the dancing hot dogs on the big screen while Danny Zuko sang from the
playground, after his drive-in date with Sandy went awry in the 1978 classic,
"GREASE".
Well, maybe you'd like to forget the song.
Or how about the Galaxy Drive-In, which was destroyed by a twister during a showing of
The Shining in 1996's "TWISTER".
Many movies have prominently featured drive-in theatres, some real and some fictional.
Zuko's GREASE Drive-In was the real thing, the now-defunct STUDIO DRIVE-IN, not far from

TARGETS - Boris Karloff stars in this 1968 thriller patterned loosely
on his own life. Karloff portrays aging horror-movie star Byron Orlok, about to retire from
acting after having made his last film, which is actually Karloffs
The Terror from 1963.
Orlok is set to make an appearance at a drive-in theatre where his movie is to debut.
Meanwhile a seemingly normal young man snaps and kills his family, goes on a highway
shooting spree and then ends up at the drive-in
where Orlok is due to appear. After arriving in a nice '66 Mustang ragtop, the sniper
makes his way inside the drive-in's screen tower and continues his shooting spree,
shooting at the movie-goers through a hole in the screen.
Horror movie legend Boris Karloff is terrific
in Targets, one of his last films. The sequence where our hero Orlok confronts the sniper
while he is also seen on the big screen is very cool.
After a long career that included such horror classics as
Frankenstein and the Mummy, Karloff passed away in February 1969.
This was director Peter Bogdanovich's first movie, and he offers his commentary on the dvd.
One of his comments is a bit disturbing; I also have to say that I hated drive-in theatres,
and I must say I think we probably managed to help close a few. Aahhh...(laughs)...cause of
the...there are people who have told me they seen this film...saw this film in a drive-in, and
they said it was the scariest thing they've ever seen (laughs)...sitting in a drive-in seeing
this movie.... If Bogdanovich hated drive-in's so much, why did even do this movie?
What a moron!!
The drive-in used in Targets was the beautiful
Reseda Drive-In in southern California.
The Reseda is featured extensively,
including day-time and night-time footage of the marquee and screen. The night-time neon
shots are truly amazing. We also see some great footage in the snack bar.
The low-budget Targets used the Resedas actual projectionist, and we see some
great shots of him threading the film and operating the projectors. The movie closes
with a nice morning-after shot of the lone Mustang left in the paved drive-in lot,
taken from the top of the screen tower.
Sadly, the Reseda is no more, a victim of "progress", Bogdanovich should be
pleased. We spotted another long-gone southern California drive-in in Targets,
the
Sepulveda Drive-In in Van Nuys. Bogdanovich
incorrectly credits this as being the Reseda in his commentary.
In summary, Targets is a must-see, it is the ultimate drive-in movie!
Rated R for violence. |
