Update: I managed the Holiday Drive-In, I also worked at the Fort George,
the Jolly Roger, and was the misfortunate person that was given the sad task of putting the final marquee
on the Michigan Drive-In stating that it was closed. The location on the site lists it as Wyandotte, but it was
actually Southgate. It is now a strip mall and a Chi-Chi's and Best Buy. (Christoper Allen 7/16/00)
Update: The Ft. George has beeen replaced by a Meijer store. (John Percey 4/21/01)
Update: Here's two photos of the Fort George Drive-In, downriver in Southgate (on Fort St. between Eureka & Pennsylvania) circa 1988.
One pic of the screen and another of the concession stand. Both are captures off a video tape and had to be enhanced a bit due to the low
light levels (well into dusk) during the taping. I can't quite remember the movie, one of the airplane "disaster" movies, maybe. Once again,
I failed to get a shot of the marquee. Wish I had my digital camera with me back then; with those things you take pictures of anything and
everything. The Fort George was later replaced by a Meijers. (Rich Kalamas 1/24/04)
Update: In March of 1991, the Fort George Drive In suffered damage to the front of its screen due to strong windstorm. Prior to this,
Meijer had been planning to build a store across from the Fort George on the former EJ Korvettes shopping center. Instead the city
of Southgate encouraged Meijer to build its store on The Fort George Drive In and the Southgate Theatre next door. (Butch Hoek 7/8/06)
Update: I ran across your website last night and thought I'd email you some current photos of a couple of the areas where drive-ins
used to be. The enclosed three photos were taken last week and show the Meijer store located at 16300 Fort Street, former location
of the Fort George Drive-In in Southgate, MI. Feel free to use any of the three photos on your website, as long as I get name-credit.
Incidentally, I think my earliest memory of going to the movies was seeing a Benji movie there when I was around five years old. I fell
asleep before the movie ended. (Rob Imes 6/21/06)
Update: The beautiful Fort George painting displayed here is available from Nostalgia Artist Larry Johnston at

Update: The Fort George was demolished in June of 1991. (Butch Hoek 10/19/06)
Update: A drive-in once again stands on the site of the Fort George! However, it''s not the type that would make us DIT lovers
happy. A Sonic Drive In, the first in this area, was erected on the former site of the Fort George and opened about three months ago. Also, a Meijer gas
station and TCF bank stand on the site with the Meijer store now. I have heard that the Meijer store, one of four in the area, could be closing. However,
I can''t confirm this. As for my memories of this theater: Well, the last movies I remember going to see here were "K9" and "Midnight Run" in around 1988.
I also remember going to the now closed Southgate theater next door to the Fort to see "Parenthood" and around this time when the Fort was still standing,
but believe that theater closed shortly before or after ths one did (so, that too was the late 80's). My Mother bought her Saturn from the dealership that has
replaced the indoor theater. Kind of an ironic twist that the theater closed, the drive in closed, yet they built a car dealership and Sonic Drive In on the sites.
Seems that little area can''t get away from cars! (Waterwinterwonderland.com/Jake Nelson 7/2/08)
